Children's Riding Lessons

Known as the Mountain Trotters, children's lessons focus on safety, learning and fun. Like us on Facebook!  Children must be at least 5 years of age to participate in any riding activities.

Each lesson is 2 hours in length. The first hour includes supervised instruction in grooming, tacking up/care of tack and handling and leading a pony safely.

The second hour is the riding hour. Riding lessons vary each week depending on the group's needs, weather and children's requests. Games, vaulting, treks, natural horsemanship and theory are all included in the Mountain Trotters programme.  Pony rides to the Enchanted Forest and 35-40 minute lead reins are can be booked for children who do not wish to take lessons.

Children also have the opportunity to pursue Mountain Trotters Levels, which include riding skills and knowledge. Four times a year we will offer the tests, and lessons and theory days are designed to work towards level testing. This is a great way for kids to increase their ability and have a goal to be working towards each week.

Children over the age of 12 can apply to be a senior mountain trotter and help during the busy Saturday. This is an excellent way to learn a lot about caring for and handling horses.

Many of our Mountain Trotters have been coming to Slieve Aughty Centre for many years and have made wonderful human and equine friends. We frequently have other events going on that are great fun for the kids, such as Summer and Halloween Pony Camp, that are great value. Check out our Upcoming Events Calendar to see what's coming up, or give us a ring.

The current Mountain Trotters schedule is as follows:
10-12 am Senior Mountain Trotters
11-13 Junior Mountain Trotters
12-14 pm Little Mountain Trotters

Children's Horse Riding Lesson Rates:

Mountain Trotters €25 each

Cross Country

Slieve Aughty’s cross country course features a diversity of fences covering 25 acres of rolling terrain. It is an excellent schooling ground for young horses, inexperienced or nervous riders, or for preparation for the hunt or cross country competition. Try out the drops, ditches, walls, banks, water jumps, skinnies, and plain old logs. Warm up in the large sand arena, or take a spin through the surrounding forest to get ready. Book a schooling session for your own horse and jump as much and as long as you like, or book a cross country lesson or ride with our staff on one of our horses and improve your nerves and skill.

Best of all, cross country schooling can be combined with a visit to the Three Towers Organic Kitchen for a home cooked meal or just tea and coffee after. If you would like to bring your own horse for some individual schooling, we have maps of the cross country and surrounding trails available. Bring some friends and make it a weekend break!
